Edwards Smith Construction Named Idaho's Best Passive Home Builder 2017

Edwards Smith Construction Sustainable Building Awards

October 2017 | News Release

COEUR D’ALENE, ID:  BUILD Magazine recently announced the winners of the 2017 Sustainable Building Awards in recognition of “firms and individuals who are driving innovation and excellence,” said Steve Simpson, Awards Coordinator for BUILD Magazine. Edwards Smith Construction was pleased to be named Idaho’s Best Passive Home Builder. The company also received Idaho’s Excellence Award for Custom Home Building.

“We continue to educate ourselves on advanced construction techniques and evolving technologies,” said Andy Smith, principal of Edwards Smith Construction, “so we can provide as many options as possible to our clients.” One example of this is the company’s designation as a PHIUS (Passive House Institute US) Certified BuilderSM – the first builder in North Idaho designated as such.

Growth in the sustainable building market, said Smith, has resulted in wins for the consumer. Better windows are being developed for all markets. These windows save energy long term, are becoming more readily available and are priced competitively.

Additionally, said Smith, building codes are expected to get stricter as demand for more energy-efficient homes increases. Homes will need to be built with a tighter seal against the outdoors, requiring the installation of ERVs (Energy Recovery Ventilators) in all structures, not just those built to meet passive standards. This controlled ventilation is needed to regulate moisture, eliminate contaminants and facilitate the movement of fresh air.

“Whatever project we undertake, passive or otherwise,” said Smith, “it’s built on a foundation of integrity and authenticity. In a world where truth and honesty are becoming hard to find, being real, being authentic defines us. We tell the truth and work hard. We do what we say we are going to do.”

Jim Edwards started building homes in the Inland Northwest in 1983 and formed Edwards Construction in 1994. Andy Smith joined the company in 1997 and the two formed a partnership in 2008 as Edwards Smith Construction. Combined, they have over 60 years of experience in residential and commercial building and remodeling.

Edwards Smith Construction serves those interested in building in North Idaho and Eastern Washington. The company is focused on processes and experiences that contribute to the success of building one-of-a-kind projects.
